A playthrough of Broderbund's 1987 arcade-style action game for the NES, Spelunker. This video shows all six unique loops through the game. Once they're finished, the sixth loop repeats until you get a game over. 2:07 Loop 1 begins 17:32 Loop 2 Walk through the now invisible keys to collect them. 32:34 Loop 3 Jump to collect invisible keys. 47:24 Loop 4 Fire flares to collect invisible keys. 1:02:20 Loop 5 1:17:40 Loop 6 Fire flares mid-jump to collect invisible keys. Spelunker is an old, classically-styled arcade game that wasn't actually an arcade game at first. It began life in 1983 as a game for Atari computers, and in 1985 was picked up by Irem for a coin-up release. The Famicom version came out later that same year, and a Japanese-exclusive sequel was followed in 1987. Spelunker is an extremely simple game. The cave you're spelunking is comprised of four major chambers, and each is locked with a set of keys that have to be found to clear the way forward. You'll also have to find flares to temporarily stun bats, bombs to wipe out stalagmites to open up passages, a zappy thing to knock out the ghosts, and oxygen refills. That's about all there is to it. It might not sound like much, but it sure does take a lot of practice to get good at. The original version is a classic, no doubt, and the NES version is in many ways an improvement. The controls are super touchy, though, and it takes some time to get used to them. You'll die if you fall any distance longer than twice your height, so you have to be extremely precise with your timing. In jumping from one vine or ladder to the next, it's extremely easy to plunge to your death by hitting the jump button just a moment too late or by banging your head on the ceiling. The controls do become easier with practice, but if you lose focus for even a second... well, splat. But once you get over that hump, Spelunker can be pretty addictive. The open(ish) level structure allows you to choose the order in which you do things, and the loops are just different enough to keep things interesting. If you want to explore 8-bit caves but the thought of playing Super Pitfall makes you gag, I recommend checking out Spelunker. It ain't pretty, and it doesn't hold your hand, but it's a much fairer and more satisfying experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it. ____ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
