I'm growing potatoes in buckets this year and I noticed black spots developing on the leaves of one or two plants. This is not early blight (Alternaria solani) but rather black leaf spot fungus (Alternaria alternata), a close cousin to blight. Wet spring weather like we've had here in abundance in northeast New Jersey, Zone 7A, is the perfect condition for black leaf spot and blight to form. While blight can destroy a whole crop of potatoes very quickly, you can control black leaf spot. You won't kill it, but you can keep it from spreading. One method of doing this is using a copper fungicide that is sprayed on the entire plant, both on top of the leaves, underneath, the stalks, and even the ground around the plants. In this video, I show you what black leaf spot looks like on the potato, how to mix up the copper fungicide, the proper ratio of copper fungicide to a gallon of water, and the spray technique.
