Of one of the most exciting, monstrously difficult, and valuable piano concertos ever written, Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto, completed in 1913, Bolet’s recording is historical, and has been my all time favourite. This was recorded non-live in 1953 with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra with Thor Johnson as the conductor. He recorded this piece many times in the decades and this was one of his earliest one, and his later ones being in the early 1970s, however the sound quality is good for that time thus I prefer this specific recording over the later ones. Even though there is an improved vinyl for this specific recording the original sounds much louder for me so I chose this. Bolet’s performance has been very acclaimed and Ritcher never performed this piece because he said that he could not top Bolet. However, the really only unfortunate aspect of his playing is that he always skips an important section in the cadenza because he felt it is too long and needed a cut. I strongly disagree with it because it is crucial for the composer and listener and the length is what makes the cadenza one of the best ever written in piano literature, and adds to the climax & excitement. As a result, feeling it will impact the listener positively, and most certainly me, I added the missing cadenza bars from pianist Michel Beroff in early 1970s. The sound quality is even better and it is louder, but I didn’t want to create a score video of that because even though it is my second favourite performance, Bolet is my favourite. Here is the link for the underrated Beroff recording: • Prokofiev Piano Concerto No 2 - I-IV - Mic... The link for THIS Bolet Recording • Jorge Bolet - Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.... The rest I copied directly from IMSLP. • Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.2 Op.16 Moveme... FIRST MOVEMENT: 0:00 Second Movement 11:06 Third Movement 13:28 Fourth Movement 19:14 As for this performance itself, the reason it is my favourite is because of how Horowitz’ like way he plays, with so much fire, energy, and power that is not to the extent as modern performances. Also, I prefer the faster tempo throughout the whole piece, especially the fact that the orchestra plays faster in the 3rd movement. There are aspects of the fourth movement that are slower than other performances , like Petrov’s 1990 recording, which sounds great too. The voicing, dynamics, musicality, accuracy, are all superb.
