In 1971, high school student and Star Trek fan Mike Mayfield wrote a computer game based on the TV show for he and his friends to enjoy. In the years since, his Star Trek game has spread across the globe, been reworked and expanded upon, and heavily influenced several commercial games. Join historian Kevin Bunch as he looks at the history of this widely available game, early Star Trek fandom and other fan games, what computer access looked like in the early 70s, and how Star Trek helped teach kids to code. Panelists: Kevin Bunch [Professional Writer, Independent Gaming History Researcher, www.atariarchive.org] MAGFest is run by MAGFest, Inc., a volunteer-supported 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the appreciation of video games, video game culture, and video game music.
