It’s early September, a traditional time for Swiss farmers to think about getting rid of some of their breeding animals: they’ll be expensive to feed over the winter months. But don’t worry, these magnificent, highly bred animals are not destined for the cooking pot – not yet, anyway. They are still worth more as high-quality gene carriers than they are as burgers, and they are about to change owners in a farmers’ auction. But first, every good salesman knows the importance of getting the customer in a good mood, so here comes the entertainment: racing-pigs. Followed by some food and drink in the big tent. The Stierenmarkt (cow and bull auction), has been held annually in the city of Zug since1897 its purpose back then being to improve the breed of the traditional Swiss brown cow. The business belongs to the farmers, but the fun is mainly had by children and city dwellers; it extends the season for restaurants and bars too. As you watch the pig-racing, you may like to ponder on how to get a pig, definitely not interested in racing for its own sake, to run!
