Rec709 Color Corrected footage. I just purchased a Fujifilm X-T3 and I thought to myself - what better way to see how the image stacks up than directly compare it to a cinema camera 10x as expensive! So I grabbed my VariCam LT and was on my way to test with natural lighting in various scenarios. NOT a scientific tests, as the lenses were different and nothing was very controlled. But I did match all the settings to get a loose idea. I created a series of three videos. LOG - what you see is what you get. Log profiles from each camera. Rec709 (this video) - Used each camera's respective Rec709 LUT to see how the colors compared, dynamic range, etc., without attempting to match them. FilmConvert Grade - Used FilmConvert and each camera's respective profile to see how closely they matched, then threw in a couple clips at the end where I loosely matched them. BUT WHY? Why compare a budget friendly consumer photo camera with video features to a high end cinema camera? Mainly to see for myself how amazing these new tiny cameras coming out really are! Image is not everything. What makes a proper cinema camera so expensive is not JUST the imager, but the features, I/O, workflow, etc. And although a few stops of dynamic range and maybe the ability to record raw, things like that, seems like not that big of a deal on many sets, it's quite a big deal for larger sets that require more information and streamlined workflows they are used to. Does it make a movie/tv show/music video/etc. BETTER? Not really. It's more of a production thing. Point being - you can make amazing stuff with these tiny cameras!!!!!!!!!! MY THOUGHTS The Fujifilm X-T3 completely blew my expectations away. Tons more information and pleasing colors than I thought - I could stretch the image quite a bit, although not as much as the VariCam. MAIN DIFFERENCES Color: Fujifilm leans a little green, VariCam has always had a pretty strong magenta warmth to it (sometimes a lovely thing, especially for skintones). Other than that the colors in both cameras were quite natural and really pleasing. I liked the way Fujifilm handled skintone and a kind of filmic, natural color palette. Dynamic Range: No surprise here, the VariCam has more range and handles gradation better, especially in the highlights. But NOT by THAT MUCH! The Fujifilm had an impressive amount of range for a camera 10x less! It did not rolloff in the knee or toe quite as well, but it still did a wonderful job. I'm sure it's 3-4ish stops less overall, but I didn't do any specific testing of this. Resolution: Both 4K cameras, I noticed the Fujifilm had slightly more contrast and 'sharpness' to it - sometimes resolving a very detailed image, other times revolving in what could contribute to a more 'digital' look. But it was not nearly as strong as I thought it might be - still very pleasing. Codec: my computer hates h.265. That's all I gotta' say about that. So hope you all enjoy this fun little test to mainly show how powerful small cameras are becoming and that there's no excuse to go out there and make some awesome content!
