KINSHASA , DRC CONGO. From a Fishing Village to the Largest MEGACITY in Africa.

#kinshasa #Congo #Megacity #Africa Hi, and welcome to Afroartista Films. Today we go all the way to Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The following are 10 interesting facts about this huge city. Also, don’t forget to subscribe to Afro Artista Films and like this video. 1. Kinshasa is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is the largest city in Africa. 2. Once a site of fishing and trading villages situated along the Congo River, Kinshasa is now one of the world's fastest growing megacities. In 2021, the most recent population estimate for the city, it had a population of 17 million. According to UN-Habitat, 390,000 people immigrate to Kinshasa annually, fleeing warfare and seeking economic opportunity. Many float on barges down the Congo River. According to a 2016 projection, the population of metropolitan Kinshasa will increase significantly, to 35 million by 2050, 58 million by 2075, and 83 million by 2100, making it one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. 3. It faces Brazzaville, the capital of the neighbouring Republic of Congo; the two cities are the world's second-closest pair of capitals. The two cities literally face each other, only separated by the huge Congo river, the second longest river in Africa after the Nile. 4. It is home to the Congo River, the second longest river in Africa after the Nile. It is also the world’s deepest recorded river, with measured depths in excess of 220 m (720 ft). With its many tributaries, the Congo River forms Africa’s largest network of navigable waterways. Apart from being a formidable navigable waterway, the Congo River is the largest source of hydroelectric power in Africa. When fully operational, the river is said to be capable of providing electricity to half of the African continent. 5. Kinshasa is Africa's third-largest metropolitan area, after Cairo and Lagos. It is also the world's largest Francophone urban area, with French being the language of government, education, media, public services, and high-end commerce in the city, while Lingala is used as a lingua franca in the street. The city is also the largest French-speaking city outside Paris, as many would expect. 6. Kinshasa is thus a city of contrasts. The city has both highly affluent neighbourhoods as well as sprawling slums with extremely poor living facilities. While a section of the population of the city enjoys high standards of living, the rest of the population barely makes a living. Crime rates are quite high here. The slums of the city have given rise to many youth gangs. 7. Kinshasa, according to a 2014 study by the US research firm Mercer, is one of the top ten most expensive African cities to live in. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, home to the world's largest UN peacekeeping force, has been inundated with foreign troops, aid workers, and diplomats, many of whom have generous per diems. This, combined with Congo’s poor infrastructure and lack of production capacity, has resulted in prices that match or exceed those in most developed countries. 8. An engineer from the city named Thérèse Izay designed robots that could monitor traffic in the city. Initially, such robots were placed in two locations in Kinshasa. By 2015, five robots were operating in the city. The traffic lights have been integrated into the systems of these robots, with the red lights on their front and back and the green lights on their arms. The robots also have TV cameras to record violations of traffic rules. The best feature of these robots is that they are immune to bribery, unlike human traffic police. This feature makes the city one of the cities in Africa with the fastest commute times at 26%. 9. It is home to one of Africa’s most popular and widely spread genres of music, Lingala. 10. Kinshasa's climate is tropical, with a dry season from June to September and a rainy season from October to May (in which there are two wetter periods in March-April and November-December). In Kinshasa, the average temperature of the coldest month, July, is 23.6 °C, and that of the warmest month, April, is 27.7 °C. Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cape Verde, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leon, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe
