The notorious Zebra Man, or Vortex, or they’re different characters, we'll get into that when we get into his updated appearances, there’s also another Zebra Man who’s never named, with the first Zebra Man being Jacob Baker. He debuted in Detective Comics #275 from 1960, which is an issue we’ve gone over before, in my Batman Zebra video, in this issue Zebra Man is a scientist who has no name at first, who gets an accident with this black & white aura which transforms him into the Zebra Man, he has the powers of thrusting everything around him accidentally with some gravity control, a power he infects Batman with during this story, now Batman is cured, but the question I have is why is he the Zebra Man, yes he has Zebra stripes but his powers aren’t Zebra related nor is his gimmick, is a little odd of a choice as his design & name have nothing to do with anything else about the character. After this we’d not see Jacob Baker would be gone for a while, instead we’d get a second Zebra Man from a story where we also get the name of first one, being Jacob Baker, the second Zebra Man, who has zero relation to the first nor is he given a name, works for Kobra along with their metahuman soldiers, Lady Clayface, & Planet Master were also apart of this team all of whom were given their powers from Kobra, he has similar powers to Jacob, however we know little about him, with Lady Clayface really being the only one we learn much about, this group of villains faces against the Outsiders. And that was it for him, for a very long time, it wasn’t until the New 52 in Batman: The Dark Knight #1 from 2011, we would get a character named Vortex who looked identical to Zebra Man, and we’d later learn that was once his name, but he’s not mentioned as being Jacob Baker, meaning I’m inclined to actually believe this to be the second Zebra Man for a few reasons that we will get into, Vortex is in Arkham where he would ally himself with many other animal themed villains, Catwoman, Cheetah & Hellhound, he’d help Catwoman escape, but afterwards Selina would feel regretful of it, so she would beat him in a fight & put him back in Arkham. We end up meeting another Zebra Man in 2014’s ARGUS series, where this one clearly is more inspired by Jacob, for the obvious reason of his powers being more close to his powerset of gravity control, this was most likely one of those mistakes that the New 52 was known for, another example of this is the ten-eyed man who as a character changes rapidly through the Batman comics & Harley Quinn comics. Vortex on the other hand would return in 2019 playing cards with Flash villains, Fiddler, Psych, & Shrike, however would be killed by Psych as would Fiddler & Shrike, being torn apart, that is a violent end for a silly character. Meanwhile back to the other Zebra Man, he would actually join the Suicide Squad in 2019, and while the series was shortlived & the body count was pretty high, Zebra Man actually walked away okay, surviving the entire series, and that’s where we are with Zebra Man. Now a version of Zebra Man appeared in cameo form in the Batman 66 tie in comics, he would also cameo multiple times in Batman: The Brave And The Bold, along with a cameo in The Lego Batman Movie. Zebra Man is a character I think falls a little flat, however does have some promise, I do think the name Vortex is better than Zebra Man, along with making more sense to his power set.
