Rather, the focus here is inland, on the Kerala Backwaters—a vast network of lakes, rivers and canals that has fostered a unique waterborne lifestyle for centuries. The backwaters aren’t only home to one of India’s most productive agricultural areas (this part of Kerala is often called the “rice bowl of India”); it’s also a rich source of history and lore associated with the spice trade. The pleasant guesthouse where I’m staying is a short walk from the wonderful, yet largely empty beach in a neighborhood that feels more like a remote island village than part of a city of 250,000 people.
