Transliteration: Yena chakṣūṃṣi paśyanti, tad evāham abrūmi ātmeti brūhi. Śrotrasya śrotraṃ manaso mano yad vācho ha vāchaṃ sa u prāṇasya prāṇaḥ. Chakṣuṣaśchakṣuḥ śrotrasya śrotraṃ sa u prāṇasya prāṇo vācho vāchaṃ. Sa ātmā; sa viddhi. A question has been asked since eternity. Does the eye see? Consider the answer…it is not a trick question.. Does it see? Really? Is it the eye that sees the flower, the face of a beloved, the rising sun? Or is the eye just a window... a hollow frame through which something deeper is gazing out? The Upanishads ask: "What is it, by which the eye sees but itself cannot see?" The eye of the eye... The ear of the ear... The mind of the mind... Who is this hidden witness behind all perceptions? Sage Yajnavalkya says: “श्रोत्रस्य श्रोत्रं मनसो मनो यद् वाचो वाचं स उ प्राणस्य प्राणः।” "It is that... which is the Ear of the Ear, the Mind of the Mind, the Speech of Speech, the Breath behind all breaths." When your eyes are closed, you still know darkness. When your ears are plugged, you still know silence. So who is this knower? It is not the eye that sees, nor the ear that hears, nor the mind that thinks. Behind them all... hidden… silent… unmoving… is the Seer of the seeing, the Hearer of the hearing, the Thinker of the thinking. This is the Atman, the Self. Is using the eyes to see, the ears to hear, by themselves the eyes can not see, if they did, all the dead would be seeing! And you cannot see it because it is That which sees all seeing. You cannot grasp it because it is That by which you grasp. In the marketplace, in love, in meditation... this Witness remains untouched. When the body is young, it is there. When the body is old, it is there. When the body is gone... it remains. It was never born. It will never die. The eye sees colors, but the Self sees the seeing. The ear hears music, but the Self hears the hearing. The mind thinks thoughts, but the Self knows the thinking. That is why the Rishis say: “Sa Atma; Sa Viddhi” “That is the Self; Know That.” You are not the eyes. You are not the ears. Nor are you the mind.. You are not the thoughts. You are the pure Witnessing Consciousness. And in that Witnessing, there is no “I” and no “You.” There is only the witness the sakshi Silence. Awareness. Presence. That is the Eye of the Eye.
