The Cu Chi Tunnels are located in the Cu Chi District of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The tunnels are a huge system of connecting underground passageways which span the country. They were dug by bare hand and some simple tools during the French occupation in the 1940’s. Expanded further during the Vietnam War, it was Viet Cong’s stronghold - used mainly as hiding spots during combat but also functioned as supply routes and even living quarters. The tunnel systems were significant in the Viet Cong’s resistance against American forces. While you can explore on your own, we felt it would be better to join a tour. We really lucked out with who we had as our guide. Not only was he around when the Vietnam war was going on, he was in it. Though he wasn’t fighting on the ground here, he’s learned first hand from people over the years. So, he was extremely knowledgeable about even the smallest details. There are 2 tunnels systems in area open to visit. Apparently this one is known to be a bit more touristy as most travel companies bring people here. The section of tunnels you can enter at the other one is apparently a bit rougher and unaltered. Regardless, I wouldn’t change the experience today.
