Join me and my buddy Alex on his Key West 216 for a half-day canal fishing in Southwest Florida, right after a nasty cold snap dropped lows into the mid-30s and water temps to around 60.5°F! We were pumped for perfect post-freeze conditions: cold nights, sunny 70s days, bluebird skies, and fish moving up to the shallows to warm up and feed hard. The plan? Troll big plugs along drop-offs and south-facing banks, then hit key corners and sand points with artificials (New Penny Gulp shrimp, Turd Ferguson special, red jig heads, jerk shads) targeting big winter snook. We talk tactics like why these conditions are prime for shallow transitions, incoming tides pushing bait, sun-warmed spots, and why 58°F is the survival edge for snook after the freeze. But Florida had other plans... We caught tons of feisty smaller snook, some solid redfish (including my first canal red – beautiful spots and blue tails!), and got absolutely SWARMED by big, hard-fighting ladyfish (aka "big sassy ladies"). Non-stop action, misses on monsters, boat beers (shoutout Michelob Ultra and Gunner's Daughter Milk Stout from Craft Number 3), funny banter, first-time spots, and plenty of "catch you laters." Was it the big snook video we hyped? Not quite... but it was an awesome, fun day proving the fish survived and the bite is heating up! If you're into inshore saltwater fishing, winter patterns, artificial lures in canals, or just good vibes on the water – this one's for you.
