The phase space is considered to be first divided into compartments representing various intervals of momentum or energy so that each compartment consists of very large number of elementary cells. The distribution of particles in various compartments represents a macro state of the dynamical system. The arrangement of the particles in various cells is of a particular compartment represents the various micro states in it. The purpose of dividing the phase space into cells or quantum states is to study the distribution of particles of a dynamical system among these cells or quantum states and therefore to develop various relations in statistical thermodynamics for the most probable macro state of the system when the system is in equilibrium.
