Thomas H. Ince was a prolific figure in early Hollywood, and helped set up the Studio System. In this video we will look at why the Studio System is still popular today. Script: Thomas H. Ince was an actor, writer, director and producer, and he has over 800 film credits to his name, even though he died (under rather mysterious circumstances) at only 44. Ince knew a great deal about filmmaking, from acting to directing. He thought he could make film studios more efficient, so that they could make more films in a shorter time. Ince had never worked at a factor, but he loved the “production line” system, with many people each completing a different, small job, eventually building a finished product. Ince copied this style and invented the “Studio System” which is still very popular today. The process would start with a screen writer writing a script, which would be passed on to a director. The director would then make the film. At the top of this system was a producer, who could supervise everything, such as the budget and the schedule. The produced would then report to the studio head, who was the big boss and would be in charge of every film made at the studio. What made Ince’s system so amazing, was that as soon as the screen writer gave his script to the director, he could start on a new script, which he could give to another director. This meant that many films could be made at the same time. Producers would talk to the studio heads and avoid any potential problems, and the directors were given tight budgets and schedules, which they would have to keep to. It may seem confusing, but it was such a successful system, it is still used today.
