(1 Sep 1999) English/Nat The recently appointed U-S Ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Holbrooke, is on a tour of the Balkan's troublespots. He's currently in Sarajevo and has met with representatives of all three ethnic groups that fought each other for almost four years between 1991 and 1995 Richard Holbrooke helped them to achieve peace through negotiations in Dayton, Ohio, resulting in the Daytom Peace Accord. Holbrooke says he's impressed by the new spirit of cooperation in Bosnia, which he says gives hope for the future of Kosovo. "I've come here for the obvious reasons, I want to see how we are doing on implementing Dayton," Holbrooke said after meeting Bosnia's joint presidency, consisting of a Bosnian Muslim, Serb and Croat. "It's the most important thing to us. The success of Dayton in Bosnia is critical to success in Kosovo and vice versa," Holbrooke said. International diplomats have used the Bosnian peace model as a blueprint for peace in Kosovo, hoping that success here could mean success in Kosovo. Bosnian Muslim president, Alija Izetbegovic, the only leader still around who took part in the negotiations in Dayton and to whom Holbrooke paid special tribute, saying without him there neither would be any peace agreement, nor Bosnia, decorated the Ambassador with a special award for his contribution to peace. UPSOUND: (English) "To think that the National Day of your country will be a day on which something happened on an American airbase in Ohio." SOUNDBITE: (English) "Throughout this country there are still forces of separatism and opposition to the goals of a multi-ethnic country, but now that this country has chosen as its National Day the day in which a multi-ethnic country was decided upon in Dayton, it's encumbent upon all public officials to work towards that goal and stop preventing people from coming home because of their ethnicity and work together. This is not a divided country, it's a single country with different political entities just like in theory, the United States, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and many other countries. That is the first time I have called on a Serb member of the co-presidency. I've met of course with the Serb co-President but I never called on him because up to this point they were not committed to the real principles of Dayton and I was extremely impressed with President Radic's commitment to the principles of Dayton which he said quite honestly was still controversial among so many citizens of the Republic of Serbia."
