Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (1644–1704) was a Bohemian-born composer and violinist who became one of the most influential musical figures in 17th-century Austria. Likely trained at a Jesuit Gymnasium or under the guidance of Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Biber began his career at the court of Prince Johann Seyfried Eggenberg in Graz before entering the service of Bishop Karl Liechtenstein-Castelcorno in Kroměříž. His talent on the violin quickly earned him respect and admiration, but Biber, seeking greater opportunity, famously left his post under the pretense of acquiring instruments, only to reappear in Salzburg, where he would spend the rest of his life. In Salzburg, Biber flourished under Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph von Khuenburg. His success was not only artistic but also social and economic: Emperor Leopold I himself granted him nobility, bestowing the title "Biber von Bibern." He was later appointed Lord High Steward of the Court, a rare honor for a musician. He and his wife Maria Weiss had eleven children, several of whom pursued music professionally; one daughter even became choir director at the Nonnberg Abbey. Biber’s violin music stands as a cornerstone of the Baroque era. His extraordinary technique allowed him to explore the full expressive range of the instrument, often employing multiple stops, complex bowing, and especially the use of scordatura. His vivid, imaginative compositions deeply influenced his contemporaries and set a new standard for violin writing across Europe. -------------------------------------- Painting: Portrait of the Composer Heinrich Biber after Paul Seel - anonymous (1680 or later) #biber #baroquemusic #baroqueplaylist #violin --- All the music used in the video belong to their respective owners and I or this channel does not claim any right over them.
