Shifter cable linkage fell off shifter lever ball end. Mileage 138k. In a parking lot I pried & pulled off lower and upper consoles. I could press-fit = reconnect cable linkage to ball end, but after several minutes of driving & shifting, cable linkage again fell off & down. I thought I'd need a retaining clip I couldn't see nor find. I pressed it on again, thankfully then made it to my next scheduled destination. While discussing with a friend, he found this video on replacing the linkage bushing; no retaining clip was designed: • 2004 Saturn Vue 5 Manual Transmission Shif... We observing that cable end needed to stay pressed up into shifter ball = so a shim is needed. 13/16" socket (3/8 drive, Craftsman) fits well. 3/4" socket had been a bit loose. This setup got me home! Thank You, Jesus!! Once home, I saw the socket had slid to one side. I cut two short pieces of small fuel line to likewise shim into gaps to the left and right of the socket. Another short test drive worked so far. This morning I'll try again to head to work, hope it holds together. I expect I'll order another bushing. See the Haynes manual section 11-25 to remove lower and upper consoles (bezels), and 7A-2 to disconnect the shift lever. No mention of a retaining clip.
