Throw ALL caution to the wind and give up his soul for power. That's going to end well! Phase 2 of the fight revolves around Mortimer and how his soul is split up into several pieces, each represented by a book. How many books there are is difficulty dependent. For Lunatic, there are four books. These represent extra lives for Mortimer, meaning he must be killed five times on Lunatic. As per Mortimer tradition, he pulls out some massive trickery. Those pieces of his soul? They turn into the same kind of shadowy wraith you ran into back in your dive into Helheim....and these are going to be MUCH more deadly. For one...these wraiths are all shaped in the image of important people from Mortimer's life, hence why the first unique wraith introduced is himself. All wraiths have the standard Steal Soul & Pass personal skills. They do have unique weapons too and they're all dangerous in some fashion. For the Mortimer wraith, it has Twilight which ignores resistance...and the wraiths are going to have capped magic or very very close to it. Also has the reaver effect too! As for Mortimer, he has his usual personal skills, but only Illusionist is going to be of any note this fight. Important because he has 40 luck and good speed so his evasion's going to be high...but not as high as it could have been if he stayed still on his throne. Mortimer is on full aggro and will make a beeline for the closest target he can reach, usually getting into attacking range in 2 turns. So, why not charge the throne? There's a trio of colorless flames that can't be killed and can't be moved past. That makes trying to engage Mortimer a little tricky. Ahmed helps out so much with this though since he can die a glorious death luring in Mortimer. Speaking of Ahmed, lots of people have a convo with Mortimer in their first combat with him. Ahmed's is an interesting one since Mortimer brings up a bold claim...that Ahmed is the husband of the late lich queen Morganis. Once you take out Mortimer, you get the rest of that turn to heal or switch up weapon loadouts. Once the turn finishes, Mortimer reappears at the throne, one piece of his soul disappears, and a fresh set of wraiths spawn in....with some extra baggage. That baggage is a portal opening up in the south and spitting out Terrors. They're just skeletons, but three of them spawn in at the start of each player phase from now until Mortimer's final life is extinguished. As for the new unique wraith, it's Maria, Mortimer's mother, hence why all of them have the same Illusionist personal skill as him. Maria wraiths pack Voidflame which thankfully doesn't ignore resistance, but will silence the target if it hits. I believe it still has the reaver effect too. 29-30 speed on the Maria wraiths is lovely too. Also, Mortimer himself gets buffs. Most of his stats go up, but his luck actually drops. Clearly affects him when he tried to nuke Ahmed again and failed! Mortimer also gains a new skill with each resurrection. You'd think this would turn him into an unholy fighting force, but most of the skills are just extra effects if he falls below 50%. In this case, his chance to proc skills goes up 30% if he dips below half health. Also, be vigilant about checking out the shrine when a fresh batch of wraiths spawn in each new life as some can appear out of sight to the west or east. For the third life, Mortimer adds Vantage to his skill list (attacks first if under 50% hp) and adds Kaethis wraiths into the mix. They have the Lightbringer passive which won't be a problem, but they do have Voidlight which petrifies if it connects. Also, another Helheim portal opens in the southeast. Just a singular Gorgon every turn, but they have high magic. For the fourth life, Mortimer gains Wrath (+50% crit rate under 50% hp). The new wraith introduced is that of Randall who still has Pride of Steel (+2 dmg dealt and -2 damage taken per 25% below max hp). As for the unique weapon, Voidcleaver, the good news is that it's 1 range. The bad news is that it ignores defense and is much stronger than Twilight and even has crit on it. The worse news? The southwest spawn another Helheim portal that spits out a singular Dragon Zombie every turn, defense piercing breath and all. Once the fourth life begins, anyone in the south NEEDS to get their ass up north pronto. The closer you can get to the colorless flames without dying to something else, the better. Why?
