The Australian Government spends 4% of the Federal Budget - that’s $26 billion per year - subsidising activities that are driving environmental decline, by increasing carbon emissions and clearing native vegetation. In comparison, the Australian Government spends less than $1 billion on caring for nature each year. We spoke with Paul Elton from the Australian National University, whose research identifies 36 biodiversity-harmful subsidies driving this impact. The findings come at a critical time. The Federal Government committed internationally to identify biodiversity-harmful subsidies by 2025 and to phase them out by 2030, but has failed to deliver this work. Reforming these subsidies presents a major opportunity. The government can reduce harm to nature while redirecting billions towards environmental restoration - strengthening disaster and climate resilience, protecting human health and lowering long-term economic risk.
