As a therapist who has experienced narcissistic relationships myself, these are the signs I wish I had recognized earlier that could have helped me avoid dating a covert (or vulnerable) narcissist. Here are 5 signs to watch for: 1. They aren’t especially charming or charismatic. Unlike grandiose narcissists, covert narcissists often appear shy, awkward, or socially unsure. At first, they may come across as someone you want to help or protect. 2. All of their exes are “the problem.” Their stories about past relationships often center on how they were wronged, betrayed, or misunderstood. There is rarely genuine accountability. 3. You worry about upsetting them. At first their emotional sensitivity may seem thoughtful or deep. But over time you start editing your words and censoring yourself to avoid triggering their reactions. 4. You feel pulled into a caretaker role. Early on it may feel like you’re both supporting each other. But slowly you start to feel like you’re the only adult in the relationship. 5. Their emotions control the room. Their needs, moods, and frustrations always take up the most space. When they do listen to you, it often feels short-lived or transactional. Healing from covert narcissistic abuse can be especially confusing because the manipulation is often subtle and wrapped in vulnerability. If you want to understand how to stop attracting narcissistic partners and protect yourself from these dynamics, I explain this much more deeply in my bestselling book: If Only I’d Known You can read the first chapter for free at chelseybrookecole.com. #CovertNarcissist #VulnerableNarcissist #NarcissisticAbuse #ToxicRelationships #Gaslighting
