Mr. Thomas Monaghan is one of the most interesting entrepreneurs in American history. Much of his early life was spent in an orphanage: St. Joseph Home for Children in Jackson, Michigan. He was able to overcome major challenges and built Domino's Pizza into one of the world's largest franchise chains. In 1983, Mr. Monaghan purchased the Detroit Tigers, and in 1984 the team went on to win the World Series. Later in the 1980s, he was deeply moved when reading the chapter on "Pride" in C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, and eventually made a commitment to give his sizable fortune to Catholic causes over the remainder of his life. Mr. Monaghan has since sold Domino's Pizza and founded Ave Maria Law School and Ave Maria University, which now reside in the town he built for them: Ave Maria, Florida. This is part 1 of 3 from an interview recorded March 7, 2014 in the office Mr. Monaghan retains within Domino's Farms, the Frank Lloyd Wright-style corporate headquarters he built in Ann Arbor Township, Michigan. Ron Betzig conducted this interview for his students at Jackson College (and for you!).
