Released in 2015 on a modest budget of around $15 million this is a film thats stuck with me. Over the years I think its became more and more relevant. We have the rise of AI, chatbots, algorithms and social media which means this movie still feels ahead of its time.. Ex Machina was the directorial debut of screenwriter Alex Garland whos work im sure youre aware of. If youre not then he’d previously written films such as 28 days later, sunshine and 2012’s dredd. He was on set for much of that production and according to Karl Urban Garland actually did a lot of the directing himself. So he caught the bug there and began work on this.
