A puff of air sends it spinning. 01:14 Curie Point Heat Engine: when the magnet on the end of the wire heats up to a particular temperature (the Curie point) its magnetic field is temporarily lost until it cools. This engine design uses a second magnet to pull the swinging magnet back into the heat source, in this case a tea light candle flame, once the magnetic field is reestablished. Repetition of this process creates mechanical motion as long as the heat source is fueled. 01:41 Subtractive Variability Souvenir: in 2022 I received these three disks, a set that forms an incredible interactive souvenir, from artist Felipe Pantone’s solo exhibition at gallerycommon entitled “Manipulable”. Here the disks are presented with a motorized mount of my construction where each can be rotated clockwise or in reverse with variable speed of rotation, and allows for different rates of smooth color mixing. Pantone‘s work is op art extraordinaire- mixing physics and the psychophysics of vision within forms that invite physical interactivity, astounding the senses and giving new insights to our perception.
