The name "Trueno" means "thunder" in Spanish, and was chosen as a counterpart to its sister car, the "Levin" (which means "lightning" in English). The three-door hatchback, especially, with its power-folding (retractable) headlights was popular as a luxuriously appointed, top-of-the-line model. At its heart was the legendary 1.6-liter water-cooled inline four-cylinder DOHC 16-valve "4A-GEU" engine. As one of Toyota's first mass-produced DOHC engines, it featured cutting-edge technology at the time, including electronic fuel injection (EFI) and the Toyota Variable Induction System (T-VIS) variable intake system. It delivered a gross maximum output of 130 PS at 6,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 15.2 kgf-m at 5,200 rpm. Combined with a lightweight body weighing approximately 960 kg, it achieves nimble and direct driving performance that exceeds its numerical value, and together with a 5-speed manual transmission, it provides the driver with a driving sensation of "oneness between man and horse" that allows the car to be controlled at will.
