Day 3 of my solo travel in Greece: I took a ferry from Rhodes to Symi island - one of the prettiest islands in the Dodecanese! This day trip was full of colour, calm, and classic Greek charm. 🇬🇷 Rhodes, Greece – Solo Trip Day 3 - 23rd August 2024 🇬🇷 📍 Staying at the Blue Sky City Hotel – Rhodes Town Day Trip to Symi Island 🇬🇷 I finally got to visit Symi after missing out last year due to bad weather. It’s only about 1.5 hours from Rhodes by ferry. I booked my return ticket through Ferryhopper for €27 and left my hotel around 8am to head down to the port for a 9am departure. The walk through Rhodes Old Town early in the morning was so peaceful - no crowds, just a few people opening their shops. I chose the larger ferry from the main port rather than the ones leaving from Mandraki, and it was such a good call. It was mainly locals on board, loads of space, and I got to sit outside like I’d hoped. Something completely unexpected happened on the way - one of my subscribers recognised me! She’s been following my beauty channel for years and was visiting from Italy. It was such a sweet and surreal moment, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. Once we arrived, I had 8 hours on Symi and planned to explore as much as I could on foot. The main town is split into Gialos (by the harbour) and Chorio or Ano Symi (up in the hills). I could instantly feel how much hotter it was compared to Rhodes - my phone said 38°C but on Symi there was no breeze! Walking into the town from the ferry completely took my breath away - Symi is so pretty and full of colour. I couldn’t stop taking photos. I planned to head up into the old town first before the heat got worse, but I stopped for water and found a cafe to get my bearings. Walking up the steps to the old town was really tough in the heat but the views and photo opportunities more than made up for it. While walking back down into town, i spotted a little land train that runs through the town and nearby bays. It costs €8, takes about 40 minutes round trip (20 mins out, 20 mins back), but it does cancel sometimes if not enough people show up. I had 45 minutes to wait, so I popped into a nearby restaurant for a Dakos salad - tomatoes, feta, capers, onions, oregano, barley rusks... so good. The train was a fun way to see the surrounding area and some beautiful beaches. I spent the rest of the day wandering, eating ice cream, and picking up a few souvenirs before it was time to head back to the ferry. There was some confusion about where to board - I was told to go to one side of the harbour, then sent back, then finally told to wait by a bus stop further into town. Thankfully a few other people were waiting there too, so I knew I was in the right spot. The ferry ride back was lovely. I sat outside on the top deck and had amazing views of Symi fading behind us whilst also passing by the Turkish coast. We arrived back in Rhodes just as the sun was setting. I walked back to my hotel, had dinner there, and pretty much collapsed into bed - I’d walked over 10 miles in that heat!
