In Switzerland, traffic fines are very different from most other countries. Instead of giving everyone the same fine, the Swiss system looks at two things: how bad the offense is and how much money the driver earns. This way, rich drivers cannot just pay a small fine and ignore the law. One of the most famous cases happened in 2010. A Swedish man was caught driving almost 290 km/h (about 180 mph) on a highway. This was extremely dangerous, far above the speed limit. When the police found out how much money he earned, the fine was calculated using Switzerland’s “day-fine” system. The man had to pay over one million dollars for that single speeding offense. It became known as one of the world’s most expensive traffic tickets. This case shocked people around the world, but it also showed the Swiss approach: fines should hurt equally for rich and poor. For someone with a normal income, a fine might be a few hundred dollars. For a millionaire, it could be hundreds of thousands. The story is now often used as an example of how strict—and fair—Switzerland can be about road safety.
