Today’s video is a real-world troubleshooting session on my Solar Lumber Kiln + OTGRND RMS system. On the bench the moisture content (MC) channels looked stable — but once installed in the kiln with long cable runs, some channels became noisy. So I ran a simple set of tests to bracket the measurement range and isolate the cause: ✅ OPEN test (disconnected channel) — should trend near full-scale ✅ SHORT test (shorted at the far end) — should trend near zero ✅ CONTROL load (added a 120kΩ resistor at the far end) — gives a stable mid-range reference While reviewing results, I realized one of the worst channels under test is routed near AC input power, which might be coupling noise into a high-impedance measurement. Next steps are likely rerouting the cable away from AC and/or switching to shielded or twisted-pair wiring. I left this video at a bit of a cliffhanger — the next round will be cable changes + additional tests. Also… yes… I mention “I need to build the door” about four times 😂 Questions for the community If you’ve dealt with long-run analog sensors / high impedance ADC readings: Would you prioritize shielded cable, twisted pair with ground, or rerouting away from AC first? Would you add a bleed/discharge resistor at the ADC input to prevent charge buildup? Drop your best advice in the comments — I’ll apply the best suggestions in the next test video.
