Here is 10 things you need to know about South Carolina. #1, we have some of the lowest property taxes of any state. The effective property tax rate for a primary residence is .55% with a median annual property tax payment of $980. If you are retired, Social Security benefits are exempt from taxation in South Carolina. Also senior home owners may qualify for a Homestead exemption that allows the first $50k of the properties fair market value to be exempt from local property taxes. #2, healthcare, South Carolina has top notch Health care facilities that vary from large hospital systems to rehabilitation centers. The renowned and nationally ranked medical center of South Carolina, MUSC, Is one of them! And because South Carolina is such a desirable place to live, it attracts top doctors. #3, Natural beauty, and South Carolina you can live anywhere in the state and know there will be plenty of scenery to boost your mood! We’ve got everything from mountains and waterfalls to seaside views with spectacular sunrises and sunsets! Here’s my sunrise every morning! #4, Great weather, are you tired of firing up the snowblower or dealing with frigid temperatures? Mild winters make it possible for residents to stay active throughout the coldest months of the year. And while the summers can get a bit sticky, you can cool off on some of the best East Coast beaches! #5, The food, southern food is the best! We love our shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, she crab soup and frog more stew! Oh and don’t ever pass up the opportunity to attend an oyster roast or low country boil! And did I mention barbecue, South Carolina is most known for their mustard based barbecue sauce, you’ll never taste a better barbecue pulled pork! Lastly, you have to break for boiled peanuts along the road side. They are the best! #6, College football is huge! Everyone in South Carolina has a chosen side, Clemson Tigers or South Carolina gamecocks! This rivalry goes back to the 1880s due to political tensions regarding post-Civil War reconstruction! Today, it’s all about the football and the infamous tailgate parties which are almost as fun as attending the game itself! #7, Plenty of outdoor recreation! We have everything from world class golf courses and historic sites to a wide variety of water sports along the 2800 miles of coastline, including kayaking, boating, and my favorite fishing! Or you can lace up your hiking boots, grab a map, And connect with nature enjoying one of our 47 state parks! #8, rocking chairs on the front porch will become your new best friend! Here in South Carolina porches sometimes wrapped around the entire house and sometimes they are built on two or even three stories of the house. There is nothing more soothing than rocking on the front porch enjoying some good old sweet tea or a nice glass of wine! And a sidenote, where I live in Beaufort and also in Charleston, you will notice most of the porch ceilings are painted, what’s called haint blue. Superstition says that frustrated spirits, caught between life and death, cannot cross water. So pale blue ceilings mimic the color of water and therefore keep spirits from entering the house! #9, Southern hospitality! I have lived in South Florida for 30 years and I have lived here and the Lowcountry for 30 years. There is no comparison to the southern hospitality in South Carolina! Southerners are loved for their kind and welcoming approach to life! When you move into the neighborhood, there’s a pretty good chance your neighbor will stop by with a fresh baked pie! Generosity and helpfulness our key components of southern hospitality! It’s addictive, too. You’ll find that when you’re around kind and generous people, it rubs off on you! And #10, Historical charm is everywhere! Throughout the cities and small towns, you’ll see the states rich history reflected in the buildings around you. Charleston, the states oldest city, It’s full of gorgeous antebellum architecture and charming cobblestone streets. There are also many sites to be seen in downtown Beaufort, the second oldest city in South Carolina. The whole state is draped in history! The bottom line, South Carolina has so much to offer in terms of history, culture and natural beauty. It offers a great opportunity to embrace the low-key southern lifestyle!
