Degenerate Art? Gerhard Marcks: from Bauhaus and Nazi Germany to Philadelphia
The Association for Public Art's virtual Annual Meeting event explores the life and struggles of artist Gerhard Marcks and his sculpture “Maja” (1942) – an important work that recently returned to Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Keynote presentations by Dr. Arie Hartog, Director of the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen, Germany, and Penny Balkin Bach, Executive Director & Chief Curator of the Association for Public Art (aPA). Hartog provides an in-depth look at Marcks’ struggles before and during WWII, the creation of “Maja,” and its survival from Nazi destruction. Bach shares the fascinating story behind the sculpture’s debut in Philadelphia more than 70 years ago.
