Asaram Bapu, born Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani, is a self-styled spiritual guru from India and a convicted rapist. In August 2013, he was arrested after a 16-year-old girl accused him of raping her in his Jodhpur ashram under the guise of spiritual healing. Her parents, both devotees, had sent her to the ashram for guidance, where the assault took place; Asaram threatened the teen with violence if she revealed the crime. He was subsequently charged under IPC Sections 342, 376, 506, 509, and the POCSO Act. The case was notable for repeated attacks on witnesses and threats made to the victim's family, raising national concerns about the lack of witness protection in such high-profile cases. In April 2018, a Jodhpur court found Asaram guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment, alongside two aides who received 20-year terms. In 2023, Asaram received a second life sentence after being convicted of raping a different woman multiple times in his Gujarat ashram between 2001 and 2006. His son, Narayan Sai, was convicted in a sister case involving abuse of another victim. Asaram’s bail pleas on health grounds have repeatedly been denied. His imprisonment, along with related criminal actions by associates and family, have exposed the widespread abuse and impunity among India’s so-called godmen while voicing the urgent need for systemic reform and protection for survivors
