A Small Park. A Huge Surprise!

Every regional town and city in Australia has a small park that people drive past, but rarely stop to take a good look. Fotheringham Park in Taree was one I took a look at while waiting to have my windscreen replaced. I first saw this park when making my video on the John Churton Walk on the banks of the Manning river. John Churton Walk -    • Taree & Manning River (John Churton Walk)   Website: sites.google.com/site/monroe3004 Transcript of Victoria Cross Winners On the left is Dr. Neville Howse opened a medical practice in Taree and worked at Manning river Hospital from 1895 before volunteering to serve with the NSW contingent in the Boar War. In 1900 he jumped on his horse and charged forward to rescue a young bugler who had been shot in the lower abdomen. Howse's horse was shot and killed, but he put the young man on his back and carried him back to safety after which the doctor helped him recover from the wounds. He was the first Victoria Cross winner by an Australian. He died in 1930. On the right is Warrant Officer Rayene Simpson. Ray was with the Australia Army Training Team in Vietnam and in May 1969 while with 5th Special Forces Group near the Laotian border when one of his Group became heavily engaged with the enemy, he led the remainder of his company to assist. An Australian Warrant Officer commanding one of the platoons was seriously wounded and the assault began to falter, Simpson, at great personal risk carried the warrant officer to safety. He then returned and with complete disregard for his safety, he crawled forward close to the enemy and threw grenades into their positions. A few days later, Simpson's Battalion Commander was killed and a warrant officer and several soldiers wounded. Warrant officer Simpson quickly organised some men and led them forward, where they came under heavy fire. He made several attempts to move forward to retrieve his battalion commander's body, but on each occasion he was stopped by heavy fire. Simpson alone and still under enemy fire covered the withdrawal until the wounded were removed to safety.
