Optical Density (OD) • This is a logarithmic scale where each increase of 0.3 in optical density corresponds to one stop of light reduction. • For example, an ND 0.3 filter reduces light by 1 stop, ND 0.6 by 2 stops, and ND 0.9 by 3 stops. 2. Filter Factor • The filter factor represents the multiple by which the light is reduced. • An ND2 filter, for instance, reduces light to half its original intensity (1 stop), ND4 reduces it to a quarter (2 stops), and ND8 to an eighth (3 stops). 3. Stops of Light Reduction • This is a straightforward way to express how many stops of light the filter reduces. • A 3-stop ND filter reduces the light by three stops, allowing for longer exposure times or wider apertures in bright conditions. 4. ND Number • Sometimes expressed as a three-digit number following “ND”, such as ND400 or ND1000, indicating the factor by which the light is reduced. • For example, an ND400 filter reduces the light to 1/400th of its original intensity, roughly equivalent to about 8.65 stops.
