海南長臂猿為海南島特有種，過去因為棲息地破壞和打獵使牠們數量銳減，目前只殘存於海南霸王嶺國家級自然保護區一片狹小的原始熱帶雨林內，是全球最瀕危的靈長類。2003年，本園的中國保育部（KCC）獲海南省林業廳邀請參與海南長臂猿的保育工作，當時的初次同步調查中確認只餘下2群13隻長臂猿。經過多年的努力，透過長期監測、科學研究、棲息地恢復以及社區的宣傳教育，至2020年長臂猿數量已經增加到5群共超過30隻。 我們期待長臂猿的歌聲有天能在海南其他林區再現。 Hainan Gibbon is only found on the tropical island of Hainan, China. Destruction of rainforest and rampant poaching in the past have put the species on the brink of extinction; it is the world's rarest primate, currently only confirmed in a small patch of primary rainforest in Bawangling National Nature Reserve. In 2003, Kadoorie Conservation China Department (KCC) of KFBG was invited by the local authorities to take an active role in saving the Hainan Gibbon. We launched the first population census survey and only confirmed the presence of 13 individuals in 2 groups. With our determined effort in long-term monitoring, research, habitat restoration and community work over the years, it is heartening to see the gibbon population increased to five groups of more than 30 individuals in 2020. We hope the gibbons’ melodious song can resonate in other forest blocks in Hainan again.
