Dr Nada Sudhakaran here with Episode 25 in 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁'𝘀 𝗨𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗧𝗼 𝗣𝗮𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆. Today, we explore the topic of Atresias. Let's go. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮𝘀 Atresias refer to disconnected parts of the intestine that show up at childbirth. This can happen anywhere in the digestive tract and prevents food from passing through. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮𝘀 Oesophageal Atresia: Affects the oesophagus, causing choking during feeding. Duodenal Atresia: Affects the duodenum and results in vomiting after feeds. 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 Atresias can be detected either before birth or shortly after, often through scans and X-rays. Surgery is the solution, and I usually opt for laparoscopic or thoracoscopic methods. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 Better Recovery: Patients recover quicker compared to open surgery. Smaller Incisions: Less invasive incisions are made in the chest or abdomen. No Long-Term Risks: For oesophageal atresia, there's no muscle cutting, which prevents long-term chest and spine deformities. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 Laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgeries offer a quicker recovery and less risk of long-term complications for children with Atresias.
