GREATER MIAMI SYMPHONIC BAND delights in presenting this performance of Brant Karrick's MAMBO FURIOSO, a bravura piece for concert band that truly lives up to its name. Guest Conductor Dr. Craig McKenzie is the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands in the Frost School of Music where he oversees the conducting and teaching of the Frost Symphonic Winds and the Frost "Band of the Hour" Marching Band. Among many accomplishments, Dr. McKenzie is the 2019 Grand Champion of the International Conducting Competition hosted by the National Association of Brass Band Conductors in Eccles, England. Composer Brant Karrick (b. 1960), is Director of Bands Emeritus at Northern Kentucky University. He served as a music educator for 38 years in Kentucky, Louisiana and Ohio. Karrick remains active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, clinician, composer and music arranger and currently accepts commissions for new works. About MAMBO FURIOSO Karrick writes the following: "On May 30, 2000, the world lost the singularly greatest Latin jazz artist/percussionist, Tito Puente. Often called "The Mambo King," "the King of Latin Jazz," and "El Rey del Timbal," his pounding mambo rhythm made time throb, pulsate, swivel, shake, crossing over from El Barrio in Harlem to the Palladium, to the airwaves of America.
