Texas State Representative Salman Bhojani describes how he found success at passing legislation as a Democrat in a Republican-controlled state legislature. Listen to the full episode here: • How the States are Doing DOGE with TX Repr... Last session, Rep. Bhojani passed numerous bills out of the Republican-controlled Texas State House, two of which became law. He attributes much of his success to his ability to get along personally with his colleagues on both sides of the aisle. Even if he has vehement disagreements with a conservative member, he remembers that they've been elected by the people of Texas. He has taken a lot of selfies with representatives and has a selfie with almost all of the 180 members in both the House and Senate on his website. Bhojani mentions that there is more that connects people across the ideological spectrum than divides us. He also mentions the importance of not blindsiding his colleagues, remaining honest, and finding two Democrats and two Republicans to sponsor legislation with him to ensure that his bills are bipartisan. He also describes how he will approach not only members, but member and committee staff, who are often able to influence members to join legislation. Of the 25 bills Bhojani sponsored, 16 made it out of committee and 10 passed the House, but pushing legislation through the Senate became more difficult. He spent hours on the Senate floor and in Senators’ offices trying to get them to sign on, which is how he got three bills to pass both the Senate and the House. While one of those bills was vetoed by the Governor, almost 10% of his bills became law in 2024. Ultimately, Bhojani describes that passing legislation is possible with a good attitude, creative thinking, and perseverance.
