The Best Easy Plants For 5 Gallon Tanks! Looking to set up a planted 5-gallon aquarium but not sure which plants will thrive in such a small tank? In today’s video, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite plant choices that not only look great in nano aquariums but also stay manageable without requiring pressurized CO₂. A 5-gallon tank might sound limiting at first, but it actually opens up a lot of creative possibilities. Because of the small footprint, you need fewer plants than in larger aquariums, which keeps costs down and makes it easier to achieve a lush, planted look without spending a fortune. One of my go-to recommendations is Rotala rotundifolia, a fast-growing stem plant that brings a splash of vibrant color to the background of small tanks. It grows upright, is easy to propagate by trimming and replanting, and does a fantastic job of helping with water quality by absorbing excess nutrients. Another strong background choice is Cryptocoryne crispatula, with its long, flowing leaves that fold naturally into an aquascape. Even though it can reach impressive heights, placing it in a corner creates a beautiful cascading effect. If you’re looking for something compact, Echinodorus ‘Tropica’ is essentially a dwarf version of the Amazon Sword that maxes out at just a few inches tall. It’s one of the most versatile plants for nano tanks and works beautifully in both the foreground and midground. Another versatile favorite of mine is Staurogyne repens, a hardy plant that can be trimmed to stay low in the foreground or left to grow a bit taller for midground placement. For hobbyists who like Cryptocorynes, Cryptocoryne beckettii ‘Petchii’ is an ideal fit for 5-gallon tanks. It stays smaller than the standard variety and adapts well to different water hardness levels. Like most crypts, it may melt back when first introduced, but given time it recovers and thrives. On the epiphyte side of things, Bucephalandra and Anubias nana ‘Coin’ are excellent choices. These slow-growing plants can be attached to wood or rock, and their compact growth makes them perfect for nano layouts. Anubias nana ‘Coin’ in particular works well for betta tanks, as its broad leaves offer cover and resting spots. If you want a carpeting effect without the complexity of CO₂ injection, Helanthium tenellum ‘Green’ is one of the most reliable low-tech carpeting plants I’ve grown. It spreads via runners and will slowly cover the foreground in a lush green carpet, even under modest lighting. To finish things off at the surface, Salvinia minima is one of the easiest floating plants to keep. Unlike some other floaters, its roots stay short, making it far easier to manage in small aquariums. All of the plants I’ve covered in this video are ones I grow myself, and I’ve kept them thriving without the need for CO₂ injection. With the right selection, you can create a stunning, low-maintenance aquascape in a 5-gallon tank that not only looks beautiful but also provides a healthy environment for fish and shrimp.
