Feed Your Mind! 5) Six Flags Over Georgia In June 2008, 17 year old Asia Leeshawn Ferguson was decapitated by the ride called Batman while trying to recover his lost hat. He had lost his hat during the ride and wanted it back. Despite all the warnings, he climbed the fence and wandered into the path of the ride as it thundered along at 50 mph. The ride struck him and he was decapitated. Six years prior, a similar event happened during which a groundskeeper died when he was hit by the leg of a passenger while the roller coaster was rolling. 4) Six Flags Great Adventure Six Flags Great Adventure’s Haunted Castle attraction was typical of most haunted houses. It consisted of a quick walk through a darkened space where employees dressed as ghosts and goblins leaped out to frighten you. But on May 11, 1984, park-goers experienced true horror when the Castle burst into flames. Most of the attraction’s visitors were able to make their way to safety, a few suffering smoke inhalation, but eight teenagers became trapped and died in the blaze. Their bodies were reportedly torched beyond recognition and had to be identified by dental records. In the wake of the tragedy, the park would be brought up on charges, as the Haunted Castle lacked basic safety precautions like sprinklers and smoke detectors. However, Six Flags escaped responsibility for the incident, as the Castle was considered a “temporary structure” and the fire was likely a case of arson rather than negligence. 3) Waterworld USA In 1997, the water slide at Waterworld USA in California turned deadly. Water slides have always been a top cause of theme park injuries since they are often geared with poor safety precautions, short walls, and the likelihood of hitting your head and knocking yourself out is a real concern. In 1997, a group of 33 high school seniors crowded the water slide. This caused the slide to collapse under their weight and a 17-year-old died from a crushed chest. All 32 others were taken to hospital with serious injuries. At their high school graduation ceremony, 17 students accepted their diplomas in wheelchairs. 2) Middlemoor Water Park This water park in Somerset, England had a pretty stupid idea of ride that consisted of people being flung into the air by a Trebuchet and caught in a safety net. While this ride does sound certainly thrilling & fun, Trebuchet's are not known for their accuracy. When two Oxford undergraduates went on the ride, they unfortunately missed the safety net & splattered on the ground, killing them instantly. Police arrested the two ride operators and charged them with "operating a medieval siege weapon without a license.” 1) Galaxyland Amusement Park The Mindbender is the world’s largest indoor triple loop roller coaster. It is also a roller coaster with one the worst accidents of all time. Originally dubbed one of the “safest rides in the world” by the manufacturers of the coaster, that was anything but the case on the evening of June 14, 1986. That day, the worst nightmare of roller coaster riders happened. Missing bolts on the left-inside wheel assembly of the last car caused the four-car-train to disengage from the track. The final car fishtailed wildly, colliding with support structures, throwing off passengers, stalling at the final loop, sliding backwards, and then crashing into a concrete pillar. Three of the people on that car were killed, either by falling to the ground or hanging on the track, with a fourth man seriously injured in the chest and neck. At the time of the accident, the park was packed with people watching a concert. Many of the concert-goers were given a horrific view as the band played over the derailing coaster. The ride opened seven months later with new safety measures, and since then has had an excellent safety record.
