We spent five days winter camping on remote Beaver Island in Lake Michigan, flying out from Charlevoix and hiking miles across a frozen lake to establish camp deep in the wilderness. What started as a simple winter camping/fishing trip quickly turned into a test against the elements. On the first day, we battled gusting winds and blowing snow while hauling our gear across the frozen lake and setting up camp as temperatures dropped fast. It was a tense start, but by nightfall we had our hot tent established and a fire going. The following days brought everything winter on the Great Lakes can offer. A powerful snowstorm rolled in while we cut firewood and cooked dinner over the fire. We explored the island, hiking all the way to the Lake Michigan shoreline where we found massive ice formations and a historic shipwreck frozen into the coast. Later in the trip we spent an entire day ice fishing through a blizzard, hoping to catch our next meal, but the lake had other plans. We caught one small perch and eventually ran out of food, finishing the trip with a simple meal of potatoes and onions before hiking back the next day on an empty stomach. Trips like this remind us that the wilderness doesn't always give you what you're looking for, but it always gives you a story.
