Hong Kong police fire water cannons, tear gas as protesters take to the streets

Police in Hong Kong used tear gas Sunday to clear pro-democracy demonstrators who had taken over a street in Tsuen Wan district and brought out water cannon trucks for the first time in the summer-long protests. While a large crowd rallied in the park, a group of hard-line protesters took over the main street, strewing bamboo poles on the pavement and lining up orange and white traffic barriers and cones to obstruct police. At least six petrol bombs were thrown by protesters, some of whom took off down narrow side streets. The water cannon, which had not been used in years of anti-government protests, could not follow.
