Report Aired July 10,2009 http://www.ktsm.com/news/gun-traffick... A new report that takes a look at Guns going into Mexico. Looking at the numbers, the magic number is 90 percent. That is what the Mexican government and our government continue to say constitutes the number of guns seized in Mexico that come from the United States. But there are a lot of problems with those numbers. According our government accountability office, 30,000 firearms were seized from criminals by Mexican officials in 2008. Out of these 30,000 firearms, information on only 7,200 of them, (24 percent) was submitted to ATF for tracing. Of those 7,200 guns, only about 4,000 could be traced by the ATF. And of these 4,000 that they could trace, some 3,480 (87 percent) were shown to have come from the United States. That is where the 90 percent number comes from. What that really means is that of the 30,000 guns seized in Mexico last year, fewer than 12 percent were shown to have come from the United States.
