Common Athletic Injuries: Shoulders The shoulder can be an amazing set of joints that allows us to throw, hit, swim and reach overhead. It can also be an amazingly frustrating set of joints that can cause pain, limitations in use, and poor performance. In working with younger athletes and performers, I’ve found that checking for common mechanical issues increase use and performance. I’d like to teach you how to simplify the shoulder. Coracoid process- tightness in the front of the shoulder SICK scapula- shoulder blade not in best position Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit (GIRD)- poor follow through These issues can lead to growth plate injuries and rotator cuff dysfunction There’s a big difference between kids and adults – kids don’t have weakness from rotator cuff muscles tear, rather it is these mechanical issues that cause rotator cuff weakness It’s pretty amazing how these few observations can make a huge difference in shoulder function. You can check your favorite young athlete or performer. If they are healthy and not having pain, identifying and addressing these issues can reduce future injury risk. If they are having limitations, identifying and addressing these issues can help bring them back to play without pain. Don’t let shoulder pain keep your child out of activity.
