These wonderful little bundles of lavender were used in the 19th century (and maybe even earlier) to be placed between ironed linens, keeping them smelling wonderfully fresh. I've been making these for almost 20 years, every summer when I have access to French lavender growing in the garden. Edit note: The largest variety of lavender I used here was not the 'Provence' strain of French lavender but 'Grosso'. That is the one that'll produce the longest stems and is a wonderful variety to add to your garden! ***The historical term for a bundle of sticks (used as fuel for fires) is now a derogatory term for a homosexual male (a connection to burning homosexuals at the stake, in the past). Especially used for burning heretics (emblematic of this from 1550s), so that phrase fire and faggot was used to indicate "punishment of a heretic."
