The United States Air Force took an important first step on March 13 when F-22 Raptors deployed to Clark Air Base, marking the first time the United States' fifth-generation fighters have ever deployed to the Philippines, according to the USAF. "This was the first time that F-22s, or any 5th-generation aircraft, landed on and operated out of the Philippines," said Capt. Karl Schroeder of the 525th Fighter Squadron in an Air Force news release. "This milestone with a regional ally contributes to the Indo-stability Pacific's and security." The F-22 deployment, which took place on March 13 and 14, coincides with the United States' major effort to strengthen and expand its Pacific posture to deter China's growing military might. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin the third secured access to four bases in the Philippines last month, though discussions between the two countries on how they might be improved and used remain ongoing. The Air Force, for its part, has been working on expanding its access to regional bases as part of its Agile Combat Employment, or ACE, plan, which aims to disperse its aircraft and make them harder to target by China. "When Marcos came in, that provided this strategic upgrade opportunity," he added, referring to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who was sworn in after Rodrigo Duterte in June 2022. "There is a strategic calculation on the Biden administration's part to build up our allies," Patrick Cronin, an Asia-Pacific expert at the Hudson Institute, told Air & Space Forces Magazine. The United States and the Philippines have a Mutual Defense Treaty dating back to 1951, and it is hoped that US cooperation with Manila will deepen in the coming years. "The Raptor pilots were able to get their eyes on the layout of the land as well as the various Philippine air bases," according to an Air Force release. "In the future, knowing the airspace and the territory below will allow for increased capability and integration." However, as stated in the Air Force release, the United States hopes to be able to operate from more locations in the Philippines in the future. The F-22s participated in air exercises with the Philippine Air Force during their deployment. Over the Pacific, two Philippine FA-50PHs joined the Raptors. The FA-50 is a South Korean design that is similar to the F-16 and was created with the assistance of Lockheed Martin. The sale of F-16s to the Philippines has been approved by the US State Department for 2021.
