Happy about this one! A brand new retro arcade is opening up in the heart of Bloomfield, New Jersey, right down the block from the train station. Hometown Arcade is actually the second such arcade under this name; the first one is located in Norwood, Massachusetts, and this new location is being run by the same family! They've been working for just about the past year to get this spot up and running, and with their grand opening just a week away, the owner Aash was kind enough to let us in earlier today for a sneak peek at what they'll have available to play once they open. Hometown Arcade follows the standard free play arcade model; $20 gets you in and gives you unlimited access to all the games they have on the floor. Everything is set to free play, so there's no quarters required. There's a heavy focus on the classics from the golden age of the arcade, so you see favorites like Q*bert, Pac-Man, Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Galaga out there. There's a selection of some shooting games, along the lines of Time Crisis and Big Buck Hunter. Sports games line the right side of the arcade, with stuff like Golden Tee, NBA Jam, and the underrated Sega game World Series 99: Go To The Dream Ballpark. And there's more than a handful of rarities mixed in as well; games that I had never physically seen before included Samurai Nipponichi, a 1984 Taito side-scrolling beat-em-up (or slash-em-up, I guess), and Hydra, a 1990 pseudo-sequel to Atari's classic RoadBlasters set on a river and using repurposed Star Wars yokes for controls. The newest games you'll find in here are along the pinball wall, which features four modern Stern machines like John Wick and Stranger Things as well as Jersey Jack's recent pinball machine themed to The Godfather! And if you need a break from staring at screens or flipping silver balls, there's also a few games around the edge of the arcade such as air hockey and skee-ball that will get you moving. Alternatively, if you want to chill, there's a side room with couches and consoles, and some tables towards the back for snacks, drinks, and pizza As mentioned, this is just a sneak preview; they're having a soft opening this Saturday, October 26th, from 12 PM to kick the tires, and then their grand opening to the public is next Friday, November 1st. As time goes on, they're planning even more for the space. Some rhythm games are expected to make an appearance in the near future, including a DDR Solo cab and potentially Beatmania IIDX. And with luck, they should be receiving their liquor license in the near future, which will make this only the second actual arcade in the state of New Jersey to also offer adult beverages. Exciting! Once again, our massive thanks to Aash for allowing us in to film some video and show off this awesome new location, and congratulations on the upcoming grand opening! Please go out and show your support either during the soft opening tomorrow on Saturday the 26th, or once they open full-time on November 1st.
