Why research integrity needs citation integrity – Halil Kilicoglu & Jodi Schneider

Abstract: Citations have a fundamental role in scholarly communication and assessment. Proper use of citations is a key element of accurate and transparent reporting in a scientific publication and ultimately in its integrity. In this talk, we will discuss threats to citation integrity, including inaccurate citation, citation cartels, fake citations, citation of retracted papers, as well as current developments from two ongoing research projects: the ORI-funded project Natural Language Processing to Assess and Improve Citation Integrity in Biomedical Publications and the Alfred P. Sloan-funded RISRS project: Reducing the Inadvertent Spread of Retracted Science. Dr. Halil Kilicoglu is Associate Professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is PI of the ORI-funded project, Natural Language Processing to Assess and Improve Citation Integrity in Biomedical Publications. His research is concerned with natural language understanding, with a particular focus on biomedical text. He uses a combination of data-driven analytical techniques and knowledge-based semantic approaches to extract and organize knowledge buried in textual artifacts to benefit biomedical discovery and scholarship, and improve healthcare outcomes. His recent work includes development of automated methods to assess research rigor, transparency, and integrity of biomedical publications. Dr. Jodi Schneider directs the Information Quality Lab as Associate Professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the 2024-2025 Perrin Moorhead Grayson and Bruns Grayson Fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. She is PI of the Alfred P. Sloan-funded RISRS project, Reducing the Inadvertent Spread of Retracted Science. This led to the NISO CREC (Communication of Retractions, Removals, and Expressions of Concern) Recommended Practice, which presents best practices to make retracted publications, expressions of concern, and retraction notices more consistently labeled in publishers’ information systems. She contributed to the ORI Natural Language Processing to Assess and Improve Citation Integrity in Biomedical Publications project. She studies the science of science through the lens of arguments, evidence, and persuasion. Her long-term research agenda analyzes controversies applying science to public policy; how knowledge brokers influence citizens; and whether controversies are sustained by citizens’ disparate interpretations of scientific evidence and its quality. Her work has been funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the European Commission, the Harvard Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, IMLS, NIH, ORI, Science Foundation Ireland, and an NSF CAREER award.
