Shmi Andy. Aykano ithakh? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Classical Syriac language. Classical Syriac: Classical Syriac is a Semitic language and a variant of Aramaic. It is not a spoken language but rather a liturgical language used in churches such as the Syriac Orthodox Church, Assyrian Church of the East and others. Dating back nearly 2000 years, Classical Syriac emerged in the city of Urhoy (modern-day Urfa, in Türkiye) and then spread in the Levant and Mesopotamia. The language is regarded as the standard form of Aramaic because it became the primary written form in the 2nd century AD. Modern day Neo-Aramaic dialects such as Turoyo, Chaldean Neo-Aramaic and Assyrian Neo-Aramaic (Sureth) are heavily influenced by Classical Syriac. Classical Syriac has multiple pronunciation systems such as an early form (now unused) and a Western and Eastern pronunciation. The Syriac people and culture: The Syriac people believe they are descendants of the old Arameans. They use both the words Syriac and Aramean to describe themselves, speak the Turoyo dialect and use the Western pronunciation for Classical Syriac. They are mostly from the Tur Abdin region and the Hassake province of Syria. Arameans from villages around Damascus like Maaloula speak Western Neo-Aramaic which is not mutually intelligible with Turoyo. On the other hand, Assyrians believe they are descendants of the old Assyrians , speak Sureth and are mostly from Northern Iraq and Iran. Assyrians and Arameans belong to different churches, have different flags and have different traditional celebrations. Assyrians have the Assyrian new year (Akitu) and Arameans have Hano Qritho. There is some overlap: for example, some members of the Syriac Orthodox Church may identifie as Assyrians. Classical Syriac is also preserved in India, where it is used in the liturgy of the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala (Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara, and Malankara churches). Welcome to my channel!
