This year at The Open Swing Dance Championships marked nearly a decade of competing in the Classic Routine division for us (minus those two pandemic years). The journey since 2014 has been a mix of incredible highs and humbling lows, and through it all, we’ve cherished every single moment we’ve spent sharing our stories with you. For us, dancing has always been about more than executing skills or nailing precision - though that is important too. For us, it’s about creating an emotional bridge—helping someone remember, laugh, cry, feel. 💔 This routine, especially, was born from a place of deep storytelling. At a time when the world feels so divided, so heavy, we wanted to explore the idea of not being able to return to ‘What Was’. And hearing how our performance moved many of you—how it gave you chills or brought you to tears 😢—means more than we can ever express. Your stories, your connection with our work, your willingness to share how our art made you feel—that is why we keep showing up. 💕 Walking out onto that grand stage never gets easier. The pressure to honor the dance we love, to do justice to this community, to represent the legends who paved the way–while still pushing ourselves as artists—it’s immense. But when those bright lights hit our faces and we hear your applause, it’s worth every ounce of work, sweat, and stress. 💪🔥👏 To our coaches: Laurie Schwimmer: Thank you doesn’t even scratch the surface. From endless virtual lessons to late-night “this or that?” messages, you’ve been our rock. 🪨 Your belief in us brought this routine to life. 🌈 Jordan & Tat: You two are nothing short of superheroes. 🦸♀️🦸♂️ Time and again, you put aside your own packed schedules to help us, no matter the distance or time zone. Thank you for lifting us up and for elevating this art form we all love so much. To our costume designers: Arianna Virgillio & River Peterson: The bravest costume designers and fellow Westies we’ve ever met. You swooped in to save the day for our 2023 costume, and this year you stepped in again with no fear and absolutely knocked it out of the park! Your attention to detail always takes our costumes to another level. As someone who views my costume as my shield of armor when I walk out onto the dance floor, you made me feel secure, confident, and beautiful. Thank you for your incredible artistry! 💎 To our hair and makeup guru: Brooklyn Lanham: You not only make me look incredible, and sacrifice your fingers with a million bobby-pins for the sake of my hair security.. but you're also my best-friend, personal therapist, and get-hype crew! You always show up for me, even when you’re not required to—there to hug me when I need it most and give me all the crazy-bitch mantras to get me in the right headspace. Whenever I’m too scared to try a darker eyeshadow, you remind me that it’s all for the show, baby!! I wouldn’t have survived this 10-year journey without you by my side. 💅✨ To our fans, students, and community: We didn’t make it to the finals floor this year. A missed hand connection in the final moments of our routine—a risk we knew was there but kept for the artistry and dynamic—ultimately kept us as first alternates. 😔 And yes, that stings. But this is art. 🎨 Art invites different perspectives, and we’re still so proud of the story we told and the devotion we poured into it. To every competitor who didn’t see their name on a finals list this weekend, we see you. 👁 We feel your heartbreak, your passion, and your fire. 🔥 This journey isn’t about perfection—it’s about perseverance, creativity, and connection. Your art was worth creating, and we are so grateful you shared it with us. To our peers who made the finals or just crushed your division—con-freakin-grats!! Seriously! The bar of excellence gets pushed every year, but gawd-damn the level of difficulty and creativity pushed it to another planet! 🚀 The routines we saw this weekend were nothing short of breathtaking, and we are walking away inspired, energized, and hungry to create more. 2025 and beyond, we’ll continue to tell our stories, to reach for connection, and to push ourselves as dancers, artists, and storytellers. Thank you for being part of our journey. We love you all. 💙🫶 #TheOpen2024 #ClassicDivision #TeamHugoandStacy #WestCoastSwing #Dance
