Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis is a condition in newborns where the muscle from the stomach to the first portion of the small intestine enlarges. "It gets to the point where the babies are no longer keeping down anything that they take in, and it's classically described as projectile vomiting,” said Pediatric General surgeon Dr. Sarah Rinke. These babies are often taken to the emergency department. “These are small babies, they're very young, they're very dehydrated when they come in. So we resuscitate these babies, we give them IV fluids and get them to where their electrolytes are normal,” said Dr. Rinke. The condition is confirmed by ultrasound. After they’re rehydrated, it’s safe to proceed with surgery. “Basically, what we're doing is we're taking this round circular muscle and we kind of talk about that we're sort of cracking a nut. We basically make a cut along the top of that muscle that allows it to open up, and then food can then pass through the stomach into the first part of the intestines.” Dr. Sarah Rinke’s curative minimally invasive surgery can be completed in just a few minutes. “Babies recover incredibly well. We really minimize the size of the incisions, really minimize the surgery that we do on these babies, and a lot of that is to improve their recovery.” Babies typically go home the day after surgery.
