How can the mining industry move toward a future that truly respects Tribal sovereignty and environmental health? 🏔️🛡️ In this MARESUNEX Seminar, we explore the complex relationship between the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes, their ancestral lands, and the mining industry. This session goes beyond technical assessments to discuss the historical trauma, ongoing environmental challenges, and the vital necessity of meaningful Tribal collaboration. The Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation (DVIR) once freely occupied vast regions of Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon before their lands were seized. Today, the Tribes face a legacy of environmental damage from past mining—such as the contamination from the Mountain City mine—while navigating new pressures from the global demand for gold and critical minerals. ---------------------------------------- Watch: Tribes Journey During this seminar, we shared a powerful video highlighting the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes' advocacy for their community and future generations. While this segment was removed from the seminar recording for copyright reasons, you can watch it here: 🔗 Tribes Journey - Shoshone Paiute Tribes: • Tribes Journey --------------------------------- In this video, we discuss: The Historical Context: The displacement of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes and the environmental legacy of legacy mining sites. The "Seven Generations" Concept: Understanding the traditional Native philosophy of watching out for the seven generations ahead of you and how it applies to resource management. Current Challenges: Why current laws governing Tribal consultation are often inadequate and the unique pressures of the modern "green energy" push for minerals. -Building a Path Forward: Strategies for authentic collaboration that centers Indigenous Knowledge and community health over mere regulatory compliance. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Meet the Speakers 👤 Racheal Thacker: A member of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes and the Pesticide Coordinator/Solid Waste Technician for the Tribal Environmental Protection Program (TEPP). With a background in environmental compliance for major mining operations, Racheal brings a unique perspective on auditing, reclamation, and community health. 👤 Dr. Casey Bartrem: Executive Director at TerraGraphics International Foundation (TIFO). Casey works globally at the nexus of climate change and extractive industries, collaborating with Indigenous leaders and stakeholders to address environmental pollution impacting human health. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About MARESUNEX The Materials Resources Sustainability & Nexus (MARESUNEX) seminar series at Boise State University’s Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSMSE) explores the critical intersections of materials, policy, sustainability, and social impact. 🔗 Learn more about MARESUNEX at Boise State: https://mrsnx.wordpress.com/ // CONNECT WITH MICRON SCHOOL OF MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING // MSMSE’s Official Website: https://www.boisestate.edu/coen-mater...
